Christening is the naming of the baby in the Christian church. This is often combined into one event with the baptism of the child where it is welcomed into the Christian church in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit with the event commonly being called "a Christening". White or ivory is traditionally worn and the most popular age at which to have  a baby christened is between six and 12 months. Babies can also be named without baptism taking place at an event called a "Naming Ceremony".

Gown are bought up to 12 months (as they are not suitable for toddlers given their length and the tripping hazard) but dresses are also a popular alternative choice for girls of any age.  Many people buy a gown for the religious ceremony and a more comfortable dress to change into afterwards for the party. For boys there is a clever garment which is a romper with long skirt attached so that you can detach it after the church ceremony leaving the baby in a romper.
